Migraines: Visual Aura

A migraine is a moderate to severe headache that affects only one side of the head. The throbbing or pulsating sensation typically lasts 15 to 60 minutes. However, for those suffering with chronic migraines, the attacks can last several days.

Women are more predisposed to migraines, about 1 in 5, whereas this type of headache affects about 5% of men.

MIGRAINE TRIGGERS

People with migraines often complain of certain factors that seem to precipitate their migraines. The following lists the most common triggers:

  • Bright light or extreme noise levels can induce migraine headaches.

  • High levels of stress and anxiety.

  • Sudden weather changes such as strong winds or change in altitude during climbing

  • Inadequate sleep and disturbed sleep patterns.

  • High consumption of caffeinated drinks or sudden withdrawal from them.

  • Consumption of certain foods can also cause migraines, such as aged cheese, food additives, or anything containing MSG.

VISUAL AURA

Visual aura during a migraine episode is reversible, and typically lasts less than an hour. The auras can have different patterns and colours. The following lists the most common presentations:

Visual Aura. Migraine. Eye Care. Optometry in Vancouver.
  • Perceiving different patterns of light

  • Flickering of bright lines

  • Presence of many different arcs of light

  • Complaints of blurry vision

  • Bright and zig-zag lines

  • The presence of a single-blind spot is felt in the field of vision which increases over time.

SYMPTOM MANAGEMENT

When a patient’s trigger is light, the usage of special tints in glasses and/or contact lenses can significantly help migraines. Our optometrists use a variety of filter to help reduce the frequency and severity of the visual disturbances. We will discuss:

  • blue light filters (standard filters block out about 25-30% and specialized ones block out 50-60%)

  • research-based FL-41 tint (blocks out blue and green wavelengths)

  • sunglasses (polarized and tinted)

  • transition contact lenses (these contact lenses will darken based on the sunlight)

Also, as many of the triggers are related to stress and diet, the best way to manage headaches caused by migraines is through significant lifestyle changes. Opting for a healthy diet, avoidance of triggers, incorporated with exercise and a proper sleep routine can work wonders.
