Dry Eye: Anterior Blepharitis
RED, ITCHY EYES: A LOOK AT ANTERIOR BLEPHARITIS
Anterior blepharitis refers to inflammation near the eyelid margin around the lashes. This condition is typically caused by an overgrowth of normal gram-positive bacteria. These bacteria will create a biofilm of their exotoxins, which will increase dry eye symptoms.
Most patients with anterior blepharitis will experience lid redness, itchiness and/or chronic tearing. Without proper eyelid hygiene, the bacteria will accumulate and increase inflammation and increase the frequency of styes.
If you suffer from one or more of the following symptoms, you may be suffering from blepharitis:
Itching or scratchy eyes
Foreign body sensation
Tearing
Crusting
Sore, red eyes
Loss of lashes
Contact lens discomfort
Diagnosis will be made using a slit lamp, which will microscopically view the lid and lash margin. If there is a biofilm, then similar to plaque on teeth, daily eyelid hygiene is necessary.
Treatment Options:
Eye Lid Cleansers
Calmo Eye Spray
Antibiotics (oral and/or topical)
Probiotics
Eye Lid Debridement
